Hats off to Susan Mead, Mary Kay Skelton and Diane Hall Sullivan for meeting up in Santa Fe, New Mexico to do Essentrics. Knowing that there was no instructor in the state, Susan proposed doing a demo when she visited and asked others to join her. All three came together in Santa Fe and shared a class. Hopefully it is the start of Essentrics in New Mexico. Here’s to making it happen Susan! Amidst rows of lavender, Heather Hughes held a 30-minute Essentrics class to raise money for her local hospice. The suggested donation was $10 per person but people were more than generous and about $1,000 was raised. What a wonderful and inspiring community event in such a gorgeous setting. My client won’t take off their shoes during my class, what should I do?
There can be many reasons why a client won’t remove his/her shoes – foot pain, bunions, flat feet, etc. As instructors Essentrics we know the benefits of being barefoot from relieving plantar fasciitis to improving balance not to mention that our feet are our foundation. We want to respect their choice and allow them to gradually understand the importance of being barefoot. As Svetlana Lysenko said, “I had a student who made it clear right from the beginning that she would be keeping her shoes on. I explained the benefits of working out barefoot but respected her decision. In a couple of months her shoes came off, I am not sure why. But I always talk about feet, working the bones, and muscles, the benefits for the whole body, etc.”
