Teachers who complete the Essentrics certification should be able take the theoretical knowledge they learn throughout their manuals and apply it to any given situation. In order to customize workouts and give the correct modifications and techniques to the variety of different clientele—you will need to become an analytical teacher. This means you are able to apply all your theoretical knowledge you have gained from the manuals to any given situation. This involves critical thinking, so you will need to have the following information memorized to qualify as a Level 3 & 4 Essentrics Instructor, which will in turn be demonstrated in a Live Exam through Skype or in person.

Live Exams – Not only do we want you to be the best teacher possible, but you will want to be the best as well—fully capable of offering your students deeper analysis, corrections and advice. Once you have completed the one-on-one Live Exams, you will be confident that what you are doing is correct. Think of it as an opportunity to interact one-on-one with a Master trainer, be given valuable feedback and then able to ask questions that may have been on your mind. This experience will also act as a confidence builder for yourself, and ensure that all teachers of higher levels can have confidence in each other and the technique.

Exam Procedure:

1. Complete the folowing Sections of your Manual:
    • Section 1: Theoretical Evaluation - Multiple Choice Questions
    • Section 2: Practical Evaluation - Submit a DVD of yourself demonstrating the exercises listed in the manuals.
       - Music: When demonstrating any exercise, please use music as you will be marked on your musicality
       - You will need to film yourself so we can thoroughly examine your demonstration of the technique
    • Section 3: Complete Apprentice Hours

2. Mail in your completed exam work to be marked

3. Live Exam: Once your exam is reviewed and you receive a pass (80% or higher), someone from the office will contact you to schedule a Live Skype Exam where you will need to prepare to discuss topics as per listed below.
    • Note: If you have trouble with any of the following areas, we will schedule another Live Exam with you until you are able to display a more thorough understanding of the material.

Level 3 & 4 Certification requires a thorough understanding of Anatomy & Physiology*
Taking an Anatomy & Physiology course will be required to gain a strong grasp of the following information:

L3) Muscle Insertion Points: You will not be tested on whether you know the parts of the bone that the muscles attach to, however, you will need to know which bone the muscle is attached to. Knowing this would indicate how many joints the muscle passes so you can determine whether the muscle is a long lever or short lever. This is crucial for a teacher to know once they start designing their own workouts/sequences in order to fully balance the Top 3 and Big 4 muscle groups. Stick to learning the major muscles that you will find listed in the PCW 1 workout under the anatomy section of each exercise sequence.

L3) Neuromuscular Techniques: PNF activates the Golgi Tendon Reflex and the Myotatic Reflex. While going to the end of the stretch activates the Myotatic Reflex only. While we use these techniques continuously, it is very important to note that they are not the same neuromuscular reflexes. You will need to be able to differentiate between the two different neuromuscular reflexes and understand which technique affects which reflex and how we can use them to increase our flexibility.

L4) Sliding Filament Theory: Understanding the role that the movement of Myosin and Actin (the sliding filament theory) plays and the direct impact it has on the length and tension of the muscle fibres. A level 4 instructor should be able to analyze how this theory relates to the body as a whole. You should know why an absence of movement can have a direct impact on the entire body; damaging the connective tissue, and thus creating fuzz. You should also know the difference between neuromuscular, joint placement and positional techniques.

L4) Alignment: Alignment is a very powerful technique in Essentrics and should be applied to each exercise in order to protect the joints and increase power. A level 4 Instructor should know how to execute each exercise with perfect alignment and make the modifications necessary to always insure safe positioning. A thorough understanding of the Load Path and the practical application of the physics and geometry of movement is crucial in understanding how to achieve perfect alignment.

The hands-on experience of participating in one is invaluable. There is no substitute for the knowledge that you will acquire about yourself and the technique, while surrounded by your peers. Class tricks and pointers, cuing, tempo, musicality, and perfecting the angles of the body are a handful of long-lasting benefits.

Music is such an important aspect of this program and it is so important that we use this tool to improve the quality of our classes and the experience for your students. The lovely thing about music is that it is a universal language; you can understand happy or sad music in any language or culture.

1. Use the recommended music from the Pre-choreographed routines: These playlists are designed for our studio, which has students age 18-75 who love the variety.
    • Find a similar tempo and style to match your exercise.

2. Only use music that makes you feel comfortable
    • If there is a song that has lyrics that don’t make you feel comfortable, it will distract you from teaching.
    • You can usually find a clean version of any song or find a different song all together that matches the style/tempo you desire.

3. Know your Audience: Music is for everyone, not just for you! Make sure your choices appeal to the type of clientele you work with!

4. Do not use the same music throughout the workout
    • It doesn't matter if it is everyone’s favourite music—they will get bored.

5. Trademark Music: Try to use classical and instrumental music that flows
    • It should tell a story without being too dramatic, which will give you varying degrees of tension you can use to build up resistance and then release.
    • Trademarks move the spine in different directions as your music should.
    • Movement of music and movement of the spine need to match.
    • Don't try to follow the beat; follow the conversation.

6. Use the music as your teacher: Get to know your music so that you can use it to count for you. If you are offbeat, it will bother the class—so try to let the music guide the movement.

7. Don't be "over the top" with your music choice, but consider that you also don’t want to put them to sleep.

8. Search, share and explore! Have fun with your music—don’t overwhelm yourself. Try searching movie playlists, ask your friends, family and clients what they like. Working with music has so many intellectual benefits that will help you use a different parts of your brain and expand your creativity. After a year or two of teaching, you will accumulate a variety of songs that can be used on rotation.

I discovered Essentrics in early 2013 through my sister Anne Marie, who is also an Essentrics Instructor (now based in Brazil) and who had been for years, a professional ballet dancer. At that time, I was a Yoga teacher in Peru and at that time in the final stages of a long journey of recovery, which was lasting well over 10 years! In 2002, at the age of 25—I had to abruptly stop all of my activities (work, social, etc.) due to a sudden extreme pain and discomfort appearing in my spine and right leg caused by an incorrect form of exercising and postural imbalances. This led to my inability to walk, sit or do anything else for 2 whole years! I was unable to lead a 'normal' life, had to stay at home and was living in pain 24/7, until I traveled to Brazil to visit a sports rehabilitation clinic. Once there, my journey to recovery started, which has been a slow and ongoing process. After 8 months at the clinic, I left and was on my own—still reaching out to physiotherapists, learning yoga, pilates (and after some time teaching it); but my body was still holding back and I always 'had to be careful' as I didn't feel 100% strong or present yet. So, finding Essentrics has been the icing on the cake as you can imagine! I now feel ready to take on the world and help others feel good and live a pain-free life too. I have learnt so much about pain and recovery throughout the years that I don't like to see another person suffering if I can help in one way or another.

Where do you teach Essentrics and how do you market your classes?

In March of this year, I moved back to the UK where I have lived on and off in the past; I’m currently based in the beautiful town of Leamington Spa, Warwickshire (1.5 hours from London). I’ve been promoting Essentrics through flyers, Facebook events, online forums, word of mouth and emails to places/people of interest. I found a dance studio with a big and lovely space to rent, and most importantly, the owner has been approachable and very helpful with my first steps in trying to get the word out. I have one weekly evening class which I am trying to grow, 2 free demo classes booked in the coming days, and more promotional work planned as I am still in the process of getting myself (and Essentrics) known here.

Before arriving in the UK, I taught Essentrics in Peru (Lima) for 2 years, where I had about 12 classes a week and a growing number of students experiencing the benefits of Essentrics. There has been positive interest, with 2 people from Peru talking about certifying themselves soon! Anne Marie and I have been working on Essentrics terminology in Spanish and are planning regular visits to Peru so we can keep our clients satisfied and also help any new instructors develop the technique there.

What type of clientele do you enjoy working with and please tell us one success story of someone who responded very well to your class(es).
I enjoy the idea of working with athletes. I think that the time I spent at the sports rehab clinic in Brazil (the director was Ronaldo's physiotherapist - the clinic was called R9!) injected some kind of interest in me regarding athletes, and those that I have worked with in Peru have shared their success stories which I find exciting and make me feel really happy for them. Through the satisfaction of any client, regardless of age or fitness level, coming back to class pain-free and with a sense of gratitude is priceless! I feel that the more I work with people and deepen my knowledge of Essentrics—the more it will help me decide on which type of client I will want to focus my attention on.

What are your short/ long term goals as an Essentrics Instructor?
My short-term Essentrics goals are completing my Level 4 exam by the end of this year. My long-term goals are to deepen my knowledge about the body, fitness and the aging process, so as to be able to deliver this program with the same passion, honesty and dedication as Miranda.
