If you’ve been with us for years, you might know us by more than one name. You likely discovered us through Classical Stretch on PBS, found an Essentrics class at your gym, or perhaps heard about The Esmonde Technique. While the names have evolved over time, the method at the center of it all — Essentrics — has remained true to its original purpose: helping people move with greater strength, flexibility, and freedom.
Miranda Esmonde-White developed Essentrics originally as The Esmonde Techinique, drawing on her experience as a professional ballerina and her years working with athletes, dancers, and clients of all ages. The result was a full-body workout that simultaneously stretches and strengthens through dynamic, flowing movement — what we now know and teach worldwide as the Essentrics technique.
As the method grew in reach, millions of people were introduced to it through Miranda’s public television series, Classical Stretch. The show became the public face of Essentrics, bringing intelligent movement into living rooms across North America and building a loyal community of viewers.
By 2008, Miranda and her daughter Sahra Esmonde-White recognized that while Classical Stretch had become a trusted fitness program for middle-aged women, it no longer reflected the full scope of Essentrics or the diverse audience they hoped to reach. As Miranda explained at the time, the name “Classical Stretch” often gave people the impression that the workouts were only for a certain age group or fitness level. Their vision was much broader.
And so Essentrics became the name that united everything — the gym classes, instructor training, DVDs, and the growing international community — while Classical Stretch continued as the beloved PBS series that had introduced so many people to the method.
Rooted in the principles of The Esmonde Technique, Essentrics has grown into something much larger: a global method with its own science, instructor certification, and community built around one idea — that every body deserves to move freely at every age. If you want to understand exactly what that means in practice, this is the best place to start.
Today, Classical Stretch by Essentrics continues to inspire viewers around the world, while the Essentrics technique has expanded far beyond television into education, research, instructor certification, and a global community of practitioners and teachers.
The names may have evolved. The mission never has: to help people feel strong, mobile, and at home in their bodies. The Esmonde Technique laid the groundwork. Essentrics is where that vision lives today.
